About the author.We have a brilliant writer here that doesn't deliver what she is capable of. She has two great series but her last 3 books don't have what the others did. With all my love as a reader I encourage her to pay attention, because to read her books is becoming a journey from "I can't stop reading" to "I can't finish this", and I seriously doubt the cause is lack of talent.About the book.First: Angel Salvatore was totally out of character, talking more here than in his entire series. I even thought someone was trying to impersonate him in order to kidnap the young sorcerer (maybe hoping for a plot?).Second: no atmosphere, emotional or otherwise. The MCs felt predictable and boring, perfect characters that tell no story.Third: forced situations.This is not only this writer, Klune is doing the same thing, a marathon of writing writing selling and little work inside the books. I hope they stop and go back to when the readers weren't taken for granted. I don't know what it's like to read this book without having read the Beacon Hill Sorcerer series first, but I'm pretty sure you could read this and enjoy it just fire without having read it. That said, Angel makes more than a little cameo here, and the swoon is real.This book needed to do two things really well. First, it needed to tell the story of an 18 year old and a 24 year old who grew up together and have been falling for each other for some time, without the younger boy really knowing his crush was reciprocated. In some ways, their story is uncomplicated and is therefore sweet and adorable. Seriously adorable. It's not Insta-love. It is zero to sixty in a really short time, though. There is a sexy, bitey vibe to their interactions.The other thing the book needed to do was smoothly expand the Beacon Hill Universe to well beyond Beacon Hill, while still honoring its place in the expanded universe. If Himes hadn't brought in Angel following a magical explosion, it would have felt incredibly inconsistent with that world, and that's the kind if thing that can ruin a spin-off. This book very successfully accomplished that.But the best part of this book, and the part that most resonated with me, wasn't between Jameson and Rael, or Rael and Angel, but between Rael and his mother. My twins are Rael's age, getting ready to start college in the fall, and every interaction between Scylla and Rael was so real to me. In this story, she easily makes room for Jameson, but she adds Jameson to her relationship with Rael rather than some sort of reduction of her relationship with her son. She loves and protects her son fiercely from first page to last. It was its own love story intertwined with the story of Rael and his Jameson.
